Links of the Day

1. Books to help your business and your life. I'm planning on working my way through some of these in the near future.

2. The perceived effects of the Internet on emerging and developing nations. I'd say we overestimate the negative impact on morality and instead of the Internet having a causal effect, it simply provides a very accessible means for people to channel those impulses. This report is pretty detailed and there's a lot of insight here.

3. A grad student's blog post critique of Piketty lands him a presentation at Brookings.

4. Toxicity of subreddits, analyzed.

Arthur Chu - Your Princess is in Another Castle

Arthur Chu came to speak at Notre Dame last night on "nerd culture" and what he calls the "transactional view on sex." Mr. Chu was very well-spoken and communicated with gravitas when speaking about the 2014 Isla Vista killings and other similar atrocities.

Chu argues that gender issues have always been around and pointed to the motif of the protagonist who "wins" a woman - as a prize - through her father by competing particular challenges without her having any say in the matter. He also contends that tropes - following in the footsteps of "winning my daughter's hand in marriage" are more prevalent in the world today than we'd like to acknowledge. Arthur's article on the Daily Beast, after which his presentation was named, can be found here.

I blogged about Chu's implementation of game theory last year in his successful stint on Jeopardy.

Everybody takes a hiatus...

It's been nearly half a year since the last post on the CMPB. After a busy yet rewarding summer, a college senior's schedule doesn't ease up much either (at least until the spring). With my near future/post-graduate plans determined, I figured it would be as good of a time as any to get back into thinking more rigorously about different facets of human interaction through an economic lens. If nothing else, this blog can act a means for collecting articles, published papers, or online posts of topical interest that will hopefully generate enthusiasm from readers as well.

Instead of getting into some detailed analysis for my first post back, here are a few things I've come across recently that grabbed my attention:

1. The world is getting more and more safe - and is a better place to live in than ever before.

2. http://theworstthingsforsale.com. What does it sound like?

3. What's killing the British pub? This one hits close to home.

4. Does the price of bitcoin matter? And what's the difference between Bitcoin and bitcoin?

5. Josh Barro's take on President Obama's proposal to tax 529s.
